Program Overview

Liberty University’s Master of Arts in Professional Counseling degree program is designed to help strengthen the knowledge and expertise required for state licensure and national certification. The program’s courses will deliver instruction using both biblical and moral perspectives in order to teach students the values and responsibilities needed for effective counseling practice. Students within the program will be required to complete an internship as well as a practicum to graduate. Graduates of the program may find careers within settings such as businesses, hospitals, government agencies, and mental health organizations.

Students may complete the program entirely online; however, there are three intensive courses that must be completed residentially on Liberty University’s campus. Intensives are one-week, accelerated courses that provide opportunities for students to meet with instructors within class settings and workshops.

To earn the degree, students must complete 60 credits. The credits are divided into 51 core course and 9 Elective Course credit hours. Some of the program’s core courses are Orientation to Counselor Profession Identity & Function, Career Development & Counseling, and Clinical Diagnosis & Treatment Planning. To fulfill the Elective requirement, students have the option of completing three Elective Courses at the 500-700 level within the subjects COUN, CRIS, LIFC & SUBS.

Students must have completed six hours of psychology and three hours of statistics within undergraduate degree coursework before starting the graduate curriculum. If these requirements have not been met before the beginning the program, students may complete the courses within the first two semesters. Students must also complete the program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Only two grades of “C” and no grades of “D” or lower will be applied to the degree’s completion. A total of 15 credits may be transferred to the program from a previous, accredited academic institution.

The program requires students to fulfill a minimum of 100 hours of supervised practicum work. The total hours are divided into 40 Direct Client Contact, 17 Individual Supervision, and 43 Related Activities hours. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to apply for a practicum. The program also requires for students to complete the paperwork, find a practicum site and supervisor. Some examples of approved supervisors for students within the practicum are Psychiatrists, Licensed Psychologist (LP), and Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). Generally, the course lasts approximately 14 weeks in the summer or 16 weeks in the spring and fall semesters. To begin the practicum, students must complete the required prerequisite courses.
