Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Global Studies program at Liberty University is dedicated to helping students strengthen their intercultural ministries. The program is designed for students who are currently worldwide missionaries, leaders within mission organizations, or individuals that are interested in establishing a church. To help develop an effective ministry, the program’s courses will provide a focused study of the world’s cultures, religions, and perspectives. Students will also learn to use a variety of resources that are necessary for communicating the gospel and scripture to different societies. All of the program’s courses deliver instruction using both moral and biblical views. This program also requires students to participate in practicum fieldwork for a minimum of two months.

To graduate, students must complete 36 credits hours. The 36 credits are fulfilled through the completion of 12 credits of Foundational Studies, 18 core credits, and six Practicum credit hours. Some of the program’s required courses are Theology of Global Engagement (THEO 605), Contextualization & Global Theology (THEO 675), and Global Studies Survey (GLST 500). All of the program’s courses may be completed online, however, the practicum requires students to complete practical fieldwork within the field of intercultural world engagement.

The practicum must be supervised by a mentor. Before attempting to complete the practicum’s requirements, students must gain the approval of the practicum’s work, field area, and mentor. Students must complete a total of 150 hours of fieldwork to be awarded three credit hours. The program provides six credit hours for students that have completed 300 hours of fieldwork.

The program offers a number of opportunities for students to choose courses that best fit their interests. Students may choose two 500-600 level NBST and OBST courses within the Foundational Studies segment of the program. Within the Core segment of the program, students may choose five 500-600 level GLST courses.

Students must complete at least 30 of the program’s credits through Liberty University. Students can only earn a grade of “C” within two courses and no grade of “D” or lower will be used towards the completion of the degree.
