Program Overview

The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program at Liberty University is designed to instruct current professionals who are interested in increasing their career marketability and broadening their knowledge within the field of education. The doctorate program integrates research, application and examination techniques within the course of study to enhance the student’s professional expertise. Through this curriculum, students will be trained to become adept leaders and gain experience making balanced decisions. Upon graduation, students should be prepared to be efficient leaders within possible careers as a superintendent, college instructor, principal, curriculum director or university administrator.

The online format of the Ed.D. program has been developed to provide a challenging yet flexible course schedule for students.  The majority of the program is offered online; however, the program does require students to attend campus to complete intensives. Intensives are accelerated one-week courses that allow students to interact with other doctorate students and faculty during workshops and classes. The program specifies which courses may be taken as one of the student’s three required residential intensives.

In addition to the on-campus intensives, students will need to complete their Dissertation Defense (EDUC 990) course on-campus. During the doctorate program, students will conduct research on an educational topic within the field of curriculum and instruction. Once research is finished, students will then need to complete an oral exam or “defense” on their research prior to submission. Students must successfully defend their research and pass their comprehensive dissertation exam to graduate.

The doctorate program’s two concentrations are Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction. The Educational Leadership Concentration will cover a variety of subjects within the field. Courses will cover topics such as organizational structures, inter-group relations, multicultural issues in educational systems and educational law.  Students should also gain experience in solving conflicts, analyzing current trends in educational leadership and evaluating administrative aspects within universities.

The program requires students to complete 60 credits. The total number of required credits are divided into 12 leadership core course credits, 12 research and evaluation core course credits, 24 educational leadership concentration credits, and 12 dissertation course credits. Some of the educational leadership concentration courses are Educational Leadership and Public Relations, Organizational Analysis and Problem Solving, and Issues and Trends in Educational Leadership.

The program permits 15 credit hours to be transferred to the doctorate program; however, the remaining 45 credits must be earned through Liberty University. Acceptable transfer credit may also be credit earned from a previous doctorate degree completed through Liberty University. The program requires students to complete each course with a letter grade of “B-” or higher. In addition, students must complete the degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. After the start of the program, students must complete the degree within seven years.
