The Criminal Psychology specialization prepares students for a career in the competitive market of criminal justice by giving students the resources to gain foundational knowledge and skills regarding mental health and behavior of criminals, as well as methods to effectively evaluate and counsel individuals needing assistance within the justice system. The psychology courses will encourage investigative and cognitive abilities, leading to a thorough understanding of the thoughts and intentions of the criminal mind, while emphasizing the importance of applying moral ethics to assessments and integrating faith and learning in a challenging atmosphere.
Liberty University’s Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program provides students the critical stepping stones in the justice field with a foundation of knowledge and skill to be well prepared careers within related fields of service. As a student of The Helms School of Government, the specialized justice curriculum prepares students to demonstrate and apply the Christian way of learning religious, economic and political liberties, while pursuing the academic background of the criminal justice system. The Helms School of Government currently offers ten residential degree programs, where students seeking other concentrations can pursue minors in Government, Criminal Justice, International Relations, Politics and Policy, Western Legal Traditions and Strategic Intelligence Studies. Online students should be advised that not all of the Government School programs may be offered as an online program.
Graduates of the degree program will develop the oral and written communication skills necessary to advance in professional organizations. The learned coursework builds on the students previous degrees, leadership and managerial assets to confidently pursue future career opportunities and certifications. Earning the bachelors degree will give students the vital resources to understand the internal workings of the criminal justice system and proper evaluation of inpidual types of crime using the constitutional, procedural and organizational methods of the federal criminal justice system. A Criminal Justice degree will equip graduates to effectively discern the behavioral characteristics that exemplify substantive and procedural criminal law, as well as the relevance between the laws. Graduates will demonstrate the learned methods of identifying the constitutional, procedural, and organizational differences of the federal criminal justice and representative systems.
The flexible and unique online format delivers courses through a virtual classroom within an individual student's time frame, and all coursework will be submitted online to instructors. The 120-credit-hour degree program is comprised of 45 general education courses covering topics in sciences, math, English, humanities, communications and the arts. The core criminal justice curriculum is 45 credit hours and delves into administration, casework, corrections, counseling, juvenile justice, probation & parole, social services and victim advocacy. The core courses are augmented for the Criminal Psychology emphasis by replacing five courses with: Theory & Treatment of Substance Abuse, Crisis Intervention, Behavior Management, Abnormal Psychology and Psychology of Criminal Behavior. The remaining 30 credit hours are reserved for a students interdisciplinary choice of electives from various other concentrations.
Liberty University offers course credit for life experiences to individual students, with previous law enforcement work experience who can document successful completion from an accredited police academy may be eligible to apply credit hours toward the Criminal Justice degree. In addition, Liberty University is a military friendly institution and recognizes some forms of military experience as eligible college credit.
