Advanced Professional Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Program Details

Lesley’s APC in TESOL was designed to help teachers expand and enhance their knowledge and skills for effective teaching of English Language Learners (ELL). Through the courses, students are provided with a foundation in ELL theory, practical and research-based strategies, and current technologies to keep teaching, and learning, fun. The program is aligned with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Students must take six courses, totaling 18 credits, to earn their certificate. All six courses in this program are required and cover TESOL topics like culturally responsive teaching, first and second language acquisition and development, and assessment for equity and inclusion of ELL students. Courses can be taken completely online.

A bachelor’s degree is required for students wishing to enter this program, as is a submission of evidence of minimal proficiency in a foreign language (which Lesley defines as at least one semester’s worth of class work). This certificate meets the requirements of some other states’ endorsement and/or second licensure policies. Students are encouraged to check their respective state’s licensing policies to see if the requirements match or if additional steps are required.

Finally, the APC in TESOL program's credits can be transferred into Lesley’s Individually Designed Masters in Education (M. Ed) program. Acceptance into the APC in TESOL program does not entitle automatic enrollment into the M. Ed program; thus, students interested in pursuing their M. Ed degree need to apply for the program separately.
