Program Details

The APC in Science Education program is designed for a variety of professions in the education sector, including classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, and instructional resource persons. The course content places an emphasis on core K-8 science concepts and keeps course content up-to-date with the most recent science research. The program teaches and inspires the student teachers to utilize “hands-on, interactive approaches to science learning.”

Students in the program are required to take 21 credits of courses, totaling seven courses in all. Of those seven courses, four are required and three are electives. The four required courses include Introduction to Physical Science; Biology Explorations in Variation, Diversion, and Adaptation; Earth Science from a New Perspective; and Physics of Forces and Motion. Elective courses tackle topics that cover ecology, engineering, space science, and particles. All courses are available online.

Prerequisites into this program include an Initial Teacher License or a signed non-licensure agreement. The program’s credits can transfer into Lesley’s Individually Designed Masters in Education program and be used to complete some of this degree’s requirements. Students interested in pursuing their M. Ed degree need to apply for the program separately; acceptance into the APC in Science Education program does not entitle automatic enrollment into the M. Ed program.

Additionally, this certification meets multiple states’ endorsement requirements and, thus, transfers easily to a few states other than Massachusetts. Students should contact their respective state’s teaching licensure office/website to see if the program fits their respective state’s requirements.
