Advanced Professional Certificate in Mathematics in Education

Program Details

The APC in Mathematics was designed to give current math teachers a deeper understanding of math concepts and math education pedagogy. The program’s flexible and diverse set of courses ensures that each individual is able to cater the program to fit their specific professional and/or personal interests and needs. The certification meets multiple states’ endorsement requirements, and thus transfers easily to a few states other than Massachusetts. Students should contact their respective state’s teaching licensure office/website to see if the program fits their respective state’s requirements.

Students need to take 18 credits, or six courses, to earn their certificate. Of those six courses, five will focus on math concepts and one will focus on math teaching pedagogy. In the math concepts section, students can select from nine courses, which include topics like number operations, number theory, algebra, geometry, statistics, and calculus. For their pedagogy component, students may select from three courses, which include Meeting Diverse Needs in the Mathematics Classroom, Assessment Issues in Mathematics, and Using Technology to Integrate Mathematics Across the Curriculum. All degree requirements can be completed online.

Program prerequisites include an initial teacher license or a signed non-licensure agreement. The program’s credits can transfer into Lesley’s Individually Designed Masters in Education program and be used to complete some of this degree’s requirements. Students interested in pursuing their M. Ed degree need to apply for the program separately; acceptance into the APC in Mathematics program does not entitle automatic enrollment into the M. Ed program.
