Medical Office Administration - Medical Transcription Certificate
Lenoir Community College
Medical transcription is the process professionals use to convert written or spoken medical reports into a document that may be accessed by other health professionals. The needed text can then be placed in a patient's record or retained in an electronic format; each patient typically has a massive influx of paperwork. The certificate program in medical transcription allows students to gain the important skills to become integral parts of a health care industry. The certificate program emphasizes the importance of storing information electronically to maintain the most current and modern methods of record keeping with the ease of accessibility by other professionals, regardless of location, time, or other physical constraints.
The integral administration duties of transcriptionists allow healthcare organizations to maintain efficient and effective procedures. The concentration will introduce students to the intrinsic courses medical professionals are required to understand. The certificate program is comprised of 17 credit hours and gives students the coursework needed to gain an understanding of: Text Entry & Formatting, Medical Terminology, and Medical Document Production. The accurate transcription of medical notes is vital to the proper functioning of many medical professionals; nurses, physicians, doctors, insurance companies and other financial institutions rely heavily on the information obtained from transcriptionists.
The core certificate program will also strive to enhance a student’s understanding of information systems, office management, medical coding, billing and insurance, legal and ethical issues, and formatting and word processing. Students may combine the learned administrative and support skills to develop personal skills that are applicable in a variety of medical environments. Upon successful completion of the certificate program, students should be able to pursue entry-level positions in medical and dental offices, hospitals, insurance companies, laboratories, medical supply companies, and other health-care related organizations.
