The study of English is an academic discipline that encompasses literatures written in the English language as well as the production and analysis of texts created in English. Gaining a formal academic education in English from Lenoir Community College should prepare students with the foundational concepts in literature and written communication to be used as the skills needed when pursuing personal and professional aspirations.

The multi-faceted curriculum is comprised of fine arts, humanities, the natural and social sciences, mathematics, and the student’s choice of electives towards the English concentration. Skills and knowledge learned in this program may be applied to careers in literary criticism, linguistics, law, journalism, composition, communication, cultural studies, creative writing, and various areas in media, liberal arts, and humanities. The associate degree should also provide students an opportunity to develop skills in analytical reading with the aim of improving writing, rhetoric and persuasive expression and classical studies.

Future employers may value the ability of an English major when requiring effective writing, logical thinking, persuasive evidence, language interpretation, and oral communication. Upon completion of the required 65 semester credit hours of the English degree program, graduates may gain the attributes necessary in professional positions of business, government, research, education, and publishing. Potential career opportunities outside typical business organizations include cultural, entertainment, and communications industries that also rely on the expertise of an educated communicator. Completion of the Associate in Arts degree may also fulfill the requirements outlined by participating North Carolina colleges and universities for acceptance as a transfer to continue their studies at a bachelor level.
