Medical Coding Specialist
Lakeshore Technical College
A medical coding diploma from Lakeshore Technical College may be an ideal option for those currently in a clerical role in the health care field. A medical coding specialist career requires people who are analytical, detail oriented, and those who enjoy working with data. If students also have interest in the health care field, a career as a medical coding specialist could be an excellent choice. The medical coding specialist program prepares individuals for employment as entry-level coding specialists in health care facilities such as hospitals, clinics, physician practice groups, surgery centers, long-term care facilities, and home healthcare agencies. Coding specialists are also employed in consulting firms, coding and billing services, insurance companies, governmental agencies, and computer software companies.
The medical coding specialist reviews medical documentation provided by physicians and other health care providers and translates this into numerical codes. The coding specialist assigns and sequences diagnostic and procedural codes using universally recognized coding systems. Several uses of coded data are for payment of health care claims, statistics, and medical research. Whether students jump right into their career or build on their LTC credits to earn additional degrees, this program will aim to prepare students to assign diagnostic and procedure codes using the ICD coding system. Other skills students may learn include assigning procedure codes using the HCPCS/CPT coding system, adhering to security/privacy/confidentiality policies, using computers to process information, supporting data collection and reimbursement system, and modeling professional behaviors, ethics, and appearance.
