Program Overview

Ivy Tech Community College's Associates of Applied Science in Accounting is more than just a degree in numbers. The degree offers a perse curriculum vital to the business environment. Accounting is the language of business and the program develops the critical thinking skills and creates an understanding of the systematic process used to identify, record, report and analyze business transactions. Students will use industry standard financial and managerial accounting principles, cost, taxation and computerized accounting in everyday coursework.

The A.A.S. degree in Accounting will give students the knowledge and skill set appropriate for entry-level careers or advancement in a current job. Graduates can use the A.A.S. program for immediate career requirements or use it as a foundation to further their education at four-year institutions. The program offers coursework in recognized technical areas and specialties with emphasis on analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The content of the courses provides depth in a combination of business and technical aspects of the accounting industry. The general education requirements give students the problem solving, communications, scientific and mathematical knowledge, while the professional courses enhance a students education with the skills to obtain employment, advance in the workforce and to aggressively compete in a dynamic job market.

Students will graduate Ivy Tech's program with the understanding of these core accounting and business courses:  Financial Accounting, Introduction to Business, Introduction to Microcomputers, English Composition, Managerial Accounting, Business Law, Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Microsoft Excel, Cost Accounting, Economics and Income Taxes.  The general education requirements cover the humanities, science and social sciences to ensure a well balanced curriculum. 

Graduates of the A.A.S. degree in Accounting will be prepared to enter the workforce in positions such as: Bookkeeper, Payroll Clerk, Accounting Clerk, Accounts Payable/Receivable Clerk, Junior Accountant, Staff Accountant, Tax Preparer, Enrolled Agent or use the degree as a foundation for higher education or career advancement.

    Ivy Tech Community College was founded in 1963 as Indiana Vocational Technical College. Back then, it was focused primarily on technical and vocational education. Today, ITCC is Indiana’s only full-fledged community college, offering more than 150 programs in the divisions of Health, Technology, Business & Public Services, and University/Transfer, as well as transfer programs with in-state and out-of-state schools. Students can choose from more than 1,000 online classes.
