Program Details

The online Master of Music Education program allows graduate students to study current issues in music education.  The curriculum covers topics in curriculum, evaluation, psychology of music, music research, and foundations of the music education profession.  Candidates may choose to specialize in areas such as conducting, applied instrumental or vocal lessons, or education administration, and more.


  • This degree program requires 32-34 credits for completion
  • Undergraduate degree in music education, or the equivalent for international students
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 for the last 60 hours of undergraduate enrollment
  • Present official transcripts from each college or university other than Illinois State at which graduate, undergraduate, or non-degree credit was earned
  • Three current letters of recommendation
  • If candidate plans on studying privately on their instrument or voice, a live or recorded performance audition on the applicant’s primary applied instrument is required
  • MMEd applicants must submit a video/DVD of themselves in rehearsal situation or teaching in the classroom
  • Copy of teaching certificate (if unavailable, provide written evidence of teaching ability and projected date for completion of certificate)
