Program Details

Individuals considering teaching or current mathematics teachers interested in improving their skills may benefit from earning a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Mathematics Education. This degree is offered completely online through Georgia State University. Through completion of the program, students should acquire a deeper understanding of pedagogical knowledge and mathematics content.

This program should lead to initial teacher certification in mathematics at the secondary grade levels (6-12). Individuals in this program will be conducting action research in their classroom, which should inform instruction. Once research data has been collected, students will share their findings and knowledge to a group of professional teachers.

Students should complete a minimum of 45-credit hours. The courses are divided into the following categories: Professional Studies, Teaching Field/Major, Select Advanced Studies and Internship experiences. The teaching specific courses can include: Introduction to Secondary Teaching, Principles of Mathematics Instruction and Theory and Pedagogy of Mathematics Instruction. Students should complete three practicum experiences.

Along with credit requirements, students will need to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better in all coursework and complete each internship experience with a “B” or higher. Students will also need to present a professional portfolio as a final program requirement.

Due to the online component of the program, the university encourages students to be computer literate and have access to the Internet on a regular basis. GSC uses the website Georgia On My Line as their distance learning browser. The Georgia On My Line site has a self-assessment quiz for individuals to complete to determine if online learning is the right decision for them.
