Program Overview

Georgia Perimeter College offers a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting as part of a three year completion program for students who are interested in careers relating to the regular bookkeeping and accounting responsibilities of a professional accountant. Students may develop their understanding of the utilization of accounting principles in business activity and learn how accountants are responsible for monitoring business activity for tax purposes and to guide the decision-making processes of management.

Students should develop an understanding through courses related to the functions of businesses and the responsibilities of accountants. The curriculum consists of 123 to 125 credit hours of classes that include Communication in Business Environments, Income Tax Accounting, and Legal Environments of Business.

Students completing the program will be expected to understand the role of accountants within business settings and how accountants and accounting systems are utilized by management, administration, and owners in regular business activity. Participants should also understand the role of accountants in legal and regulatory settings, in addition to the preparation of documentation demonstrating the organization’s tax responsibilities, and show understanding of the systems utilized in the preparation and interpretation of financial statements and how they are utilized for the purposes of management and monitoring of business activities.

Students should also learn the fundamental accounting concepts needed for understanding of principles and practices of accounting, understand the concepts of cash and accrual-based accounting and how resources depreciate and deplete, and how accounting systems are utilized to examine problems within a business in order to aid in the decision-making process.

    Perimeter College was founded in 1964 as DeKalb College, a two-year college in Clarkston governed by the DeKalb County Board of Education. The institution grew, opening additional campuses in the county before becoming part of the University System of Georgia in 1986. The college continued to expand and, in 1998, changed its name to Georgia Perimeter College to reflect its broad footprint in the metro Atlanta area. Perimeter College is a diverse, multi-campus urban research university in metropolitan Atlanta. The college is the major provider of associate degrees and student transfer opportunities in Georgia and a gateway to higher education, easing students’ entry into college-level study.
