Program Overview

Georgia Perimeter University offers an Associate of Science degree in Social Work for students interested in taking part in an introductory college curriculum in which they will learn about social care, counseling services, and working with at-risk individuals and families as part of the services provided by social workers and social services. Students in the program should develop their understanding of psychology, ethics, social work, cultural issues, and other social working skills necessary to develop a generalist perspective for social work responsibilities.

Students completing the program should have demonstrated their understanding of the concepts that form the foundation of social work and understand the roles and responsibilities of social services and social workers. Students should also understand the processes involved in the creation of a social service program and the political, social, and community influences on the development of a program, and comprehend the economics and legal issues relating to the development of social service programs, especially those that have to utilize limited resources in order to provide services.

Furthermore, students should develop their understanding of research in social services and the influence of government in the funding and development of social services programs and research. Graduates should be able to utilize basic skills to provide human services interactions, understand the function of organizations and service systems devoted to providing social services, and function effectively as a professional in social service organizations as a social worker or social service professional.

    School Overview

    Perimeter College was founded in 1964 as DeKalb College, a two-year college in Clarkston governed by the DeKalb County Board of Education. The institution grew, opening additional campuses in the county before becoming part of the University System of Georgia in 1986. The college continued to expand and, in 1998, changed its name to Georgia Perimeter College to reflect its broad footprint in the metro Atlanta area. Perimeter College is a diverse, multi-campus urban research university in metropolitan Atlanta. The college is the major provider of associate degrees and student transfer opportunities in Georgia and a gateway to higher education, easing students’ entry into college-level study.
