Program Details

The online Certificate in Teaching Assistant program from Genesee Community College prepares both current and prospective teacher aides and assistants to work with students from prekindergarten through high school. Graduates of the program are able to:

  • Apply critical reading and thinking skills required to be an effective paraprofessional within the field of education
  • Employ proficient written and verbal communication skills, including the appropriate use of technology
  • Compare the roles and responsibilities of the teacher and paraprofessional and apply ethical standards within the field of education
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic theories and general practices for effectively assisting within the classroom environment
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the social, political, and economic forces that influence public education
  • Identify diverse communities and individuals and critically reflect upon the importance of respect for diversity
  • Demonstrate sufficient preparation for career development and/or continuation in an AS or AAS program


  • Official high school transcript or GED
  • Official transcripts from any college attended
  • ACT scores (if not taken, students must take Genesee Community College's Compass placement test, which is free of charge)
  • To qualify for New York State resident tuition, students must submit a Certificate of Residence
