History - Associate of Arts
The Associate of Arts in History degree offered by Front Range Community College is specifically for individuals who plan to transfer into a 4-year baccalaureate program at a university or college and to major in History. The degree students earn from this program will not only indicate the awarding of an Associate of Arts degree, but also the specific emphasis in History.
Individuals who wish to pursue further studies in History, Political Science, or other related subject areas should be prepared by this program to meet the needs and challenges of a bachelor’s level program of study. The required courses in this program cover basic concepts and theories to help students build a foundational set of skills and knowledge related to the competencies of higher education and the field of history. Students work with their faculty advisors to build a course of study that best fits their personal interests and professional and educational needs.
Students must complete 60 credit hours of courses in order to graduate with this degree. An aim of this program is to help students gain important competencies in a wide variety of subject matters and hone their critical thinking skills and analysis. Students must take 34 credit hours of courses in the following subject areas: English, Mathematics, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural or Physical Sciences. Students take 15 credit hours in courses related to the study of History: Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communication, Western Civilization: 1650 to Present or The World 1500 to Present, U.S. History to Reconstruction, U.S. History Since the Civil War, and an additional History elective. Students then have 11 additional hours that should be chosen according to their personal interests and career and educational goals.
