Program Overview

Fordham University’s Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education in New York, New York offers students a Master of Arts Degree in Pastoral Care that cultivates in-depth study, meaningful reflection, as well as combines theory and practice for proficient understanding of the material.  This degree is designed to prepare those engaged in the work of ministry to be effective pastoral caregivers in their present and future ministries. A major goal is to provide students with the knowledge and skill set they need to understand the purpose of pastoral care and how to apply it in specific situation of ministry. 

The program ranges from general pastoral care practice as well as expertise in specialized areas of pastoral diagnosis.  At the core of the MA program in Pastoral Care are philosophical, theological, historical, psychological, sociological, and cultural foundations. This program also in accordance with Fordham’s Jesuit mission and pays special attention to Ignatian pedagogy and spirituality and explores the role that pastoral care plays in dealing with issues of crisis, suffering, emotional and spiritual healing. 

For the online degree requirements students participate in a Discussion Board, conduct research and write papers submitted online. Students in the program progress through the curriculum completing courses online through the Internet on a program called Blackboard.

    School Overview

    Fordham University was founded in 1841 as St. John’s College as the first Catholic institution in the northeastern United States. In 1907 the name was changed to Fordham University. Originally, the college was formed to serve immigrants in New York City and now focuses on exceptional education distinguished by the Jesuit tradition. In 2010, The Carnegie Foundation classified Fordham as a high-research doctoral university.

    Fordham offers more than 70 majors, minors, and pre-professional programs for undergraduates, as well as graduate degree programs and continuing education programs.
