Associate of Arts in Teaching: 4-8, EC-12 Special Education
Eastfield College offers an online Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree designed for students who intend to transfer to baccalaureate programs that lead to initial Texas teacher certification. This specific degree plan is ideal for those who want to earn certification to teach in Grades 4-8 or all levels of Special Education.
To receive this AAT degree the student must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours in required courses, receive a GPA of 2.0, earn a grade of "C" or better in English 1301, Speech (1311, 1315 or 1321), and a mathematics course, meet all Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standards, and finally, complete at least 25 percent of the credit hours through the college awarding the degree.
AAT degree course requirements are broken down into three tiers. Tier one, core foundations, includes courses in Critical Reading and Writing (six hours), Speaking and Listening (three to four hours), Quantitative Reasoning (three to four hours), and Wellness and the Human Experience (one to three hours).
Tier two, core domains, has classes in Qualitative Reasoning- Literacy and Research (three hours), Self and Society (nine hours), Humanity-Creativity and the Aesthetic Experience (six hours), and Scientific Discovery and Sustainability (eight hours).
Tier three, integrative learning, includes one course in Critical Issues in Local, National and Global Contexts (three hours).
Finally, the student selects three hours of General Electives (aside from those with the prefix BIOL, CHEM, ENGR, ENVR, FORS, GEOL, MATH, PHYS, OR ANTH) in conjunction with 15-16 hours of required Teaching courses. Total credit hours for the successful completion of this degree are 60-65.
