Program Details

Eastern New Mexico University offers an online Master of Special Education (M. Sp. Ed.) degree for teachers interested in continuing their professional development by becoming curriculum leaders or furthering their academic credentials. Those accepted into the program may choose between two areas of emphasis in either a General Emphasis or Early Childhood Special Education Emphasis.

The program requires four core courses, 15 credit hours of additional special education coursework, and nine hours of advisor-approved electives. The thesis option requires 30 hours of coursework in conjunction with the written project that includes an oral defense. The non-thesis option requires 36 hours of coursework and a comprehensive written exam.

Ultimately, for the MEd in Special Education there are eight possible degree programs: General Emphasis, General Emphasis with Thesis, Early Childhood, Early Childhood with Thesis, General, Pedagogy, Pedagogy with Thesis, or an Alternative Licensure. All programs require 36 credit hours for graduation except for the Alternative Licensure program which has its own 21 hours of coursework designed specifically for teacher’s already possessing a bachelor’s or master’s degree and wish to obtain special education teaching credentials in the state of New Mexico.
