Program Details
The online Diploma in Cancer Information Management prepares students for careers in hospital-based cancer registries or population-based central registries, which are the basic methods by which information about the incidence, type, extent of disease at the time of diagnosis, treatment methods used, and survival of patients with cancer is systematically collected. Specific duties include identifying reportable cancers, abstracting patient cancer data from patient reports, monitoring cancer data, performing cancer patient follow-up activities, assisting medical staff and epidemiologists in special studies and research, assuring patient privacy and data integrity and security, and reporting cancer data to health care officials, hospital administrators, and physician regulatory agencies for prevention and control. Major areas of study include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, computer principles and data presentation methods, statistics and epidemiology, registry organization and operations, data abstracting principles, and legal and ethical issues.
