Program Details

The online Graduate Certificate in Reading Instruction program is designed for educators with valid teaching certificates who have previously completed coursework in developmental reading methods.  The program further develops professional knowledge and skills regarding teaching reading to students from PreK-12 and may be applied toward the requirements for the Reading Teacher Endorsement.  Required courses include:

  • Advanced Developmental Reading
  • Diagnosis of Reading Problems
  • Remediation of Reading Problems
  • Remedial Reading Practicum
  • Content Area Literacy Instruction

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution approved by Eastern Illinois University and a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of graded academic course work
  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • Teaching certification
  • Prior coursework in reading methods (e.g., ELE 3280 Developmental Reading in the Elementary School – 3 hrs. or ELE 3281 Developmental Reading in Early Childhood – 3 hrs.)
