Health administration and the application of health care resources continue to grow as a challenge and become more complex as the health care industry becomes more varied. Traditional skills critical to performing core administrative functions have to be expanded to include greater management and leadership skills, especially as the nature of health care industry and related fields continue to become more perse and unpredictable. Health care management requires a specialized education that matches the ability of the manager to the specialized needs of a hospital, medical center, or a health care related business.
East Tennessee State University offers a Master of Public Health degree for students developing their professional credentials and marketability in the field of public health and public health care administration. The program is available entirely online for students who are unable to meet the rigors of an on-campus classroom schedule. The benefit of online education curriculum is that it affords students the flexibility they need to meet their goals for higher education without sacrificing their personal or professional schedules in order to do so.
The curriculum for the Master of Public Health program has two concentrations available, including Health Services Administration and Epidemiology. Students in either concentration will perform a core curriculum including philosophies of public health, environmental health practices, social and behavioral foundations of public health, biostatistics, epidemiology and health care administration. Students in the Health Services Administration program will then take courses in managing health care organizations, health services organization & delivery, health policy, politics, and analysis, and health resources management in health organizations among several electives. The students in the epidemiology courses will take biostatistics, epidemiology, epidemiology of chronic disease, and epidemiology of infectious diseases, among several electives. After completing either program, students will be required to perform a practicum in public health care field experience.
