Program Overview

East Tennessee State University offers a specialized program for school leadership. The Educational Specialist in School System Leadership program is a post-graduate degree program intended for teachers and educational administrators seeking to open their career opportunities in the administration and leadership of school and educational systems. This program is exclusively available to students with a Master’s degree in Education, Teaching, or a Master’s degree in a related field. Students must pass an admission screening process involving examinations and interviews. 

School System Leaders take the roles of school system superintendent or other positions of school leadership. Professionals in this position take the role of working on policies and decisions that impact the educational and administrative strategies of an entire school system.

Graduates of the Educational Specialist in School System Leadership program from East Tennessee State University will have proven their ability to understand the needs and responsibilities of a leadership position in an educational setting. Graduates will have developed their leadership potential through courses such as instructional leadership, integrating public agencies, leadership for lifelong learning, organizational development, personnel management, adult learning, evaluation techniques, educational statistics, risk management, strategic planning/budgeting, law for organizational leaders, and school housing & transportation. 

Graduates of the program will be expected and trained to conduct themselves as ethical professionals who demonstrate the ability to make informed decisions and act as an advocate for sound educational practices. After completing an internship, students will have be awarded the title of Educational Specialist.

    East Tennessee State University is a four-year public institution of higher education located in Johnson City, Tennessee. Students at ETSU can earn their bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. Founded in 1911 as the East Tennessee State Normal School and its original purpose was to be a training school for teachers. Over the next few decades the college began to expand its degree offerings and areas of specialization.
