Program Overview

East Tennessee State University offers the Doctor of Education in School Leadership degree for professionals seeking to establish themselves as contributing members of the educational community. The program is designed for students holding a Master of Specialist degree who seek advanced knowledge and skills in educational leadership and research. The program is intended for those who are developing their credentials and their knowledge fields related to educational leadership in K-12 education, post-secondary education, and private sector education. Students seeking entrance into the program will be screened to verify that the inpidual is a qualified candidate for the program.  Students will be required to submit a residency portfolio of activities and complete a qualifying examination. 

As part of the School Leadership concentration students will focus on the roles of educational administrators and educational institutional planners. This focus, and the focus of research in the program are the basis of the curriculum, including courses in:

  • Research in Educational Leadership
  • Theories of Educational Administration
  • Strategic Planning and School-Based Decision Making
  • Creating School Culture that Support Teaching and Learning
  • Innovative practices in Classroom Leadership

  • Law for Educational Leaders
  • School Housing and Transportation
  • School Finance and Business Methods
  • Policy analysis, and more.

Doctoral candidates will be required to perform an internship as part of the program, and in order to achieve the doctorate, must pass a doctoral dissertation, representing a contributing research study on the field of school leadership. Upon successfully defending their dissertation, the title of Doctor of Education in School Leadership will be bestowed upon the student.

    East Tennessee State University is a four-year public institution of higher education located in Johnson City, Tennessee. Students at ETSU can earn their bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. Founded in 1911 as the East Tennessee State Normal School and its original purpose was to be a training school for teachers. Over the next few decades the college began to expand its degree offerings and areas of specialization.
