As part of the program, students who have those educational requirements can complete their degree, even though they may have families or professional schedules which restrict their ability to attend classes. The program is designed to develop organizational leadership skills to assist students in corporate, industrial, governmental, or non-profit careers.

Students will study topics and develop their knowledge and skills in areas such as organizational behavior, management, ethics, interpersonal skills, communication, and finance. The classes last eight weeks each and are held five times throughout the year, with most of the classes being offered online. The benefit of an online education is extra important to students who would otherwise not complete their degree due to their inability to meet the rigors of a traditional in-person classroom education program. In addition, classes will include inpidual and group projects and students are capable of receiving credit hours based on working experience.

The university was renamed in 1985 to its current name.

Within ECU, the university has four specialized colleges and a graduate school. The specialized colleges include the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the School of Business, the College of Education and Psychology, and the College of Health and Sciences. Additionally, EDU has an online distance-learning program. ECU offers degrees at the bachelor’s and master’s level.
