Master of Science in Data Science
East Carolina University

Program Details

If you are interested in exploring the newest STEM degree that offers endless career opportunities, you should explore the Master of Science in Data Science.  Big data, machine learning, and cloud computing have changed how we live and work; this online data science degree uses these technologies to solve difficult problems.   With probability and statistics as the foundation, data science can be applied to numerous domains, but at ECU healthcare is the focus.  Students learn to provide data-driven innovative solutions to challenging problems in healthcare as they study to become future leaders and innovators who will be able to reduce the costs while improving the quality of healthcare.  Courses will examine such problems as:

  • Efficiently handling large volumes of medical imaging data and extracting useful information
  • Combining computationally intensive genomic data analysis with standard clinical data
  • Capturing patient behavioral data through several sensors and social media channels
  • Using Big Data to provide personalized care
  • Inferring knowledge from complex patient data sources

Beyond the healthcare focus, graduates are able to develop and use computational techniques to clean, transform, integrate, and aggregate data from diverse sources and determine the suitability of the resulting data for a given purpose, apply Big Data analytics and machine learning methods to analyze vast and heterogenous datasets to generate actionable insights, and use critical thinking to make decisions based on data and deep analytics.
