BS in Birth Through Kindergarten Teacher Education

Program Details

Over the past two decades, evidence has been found showing that the period before kindergarten is the most important period for a child’s development. The learning done during this period may set the stage for a child’s entire educational future, whether they are a leader in the class or not. Programs are available for pre-kindergarten education to care for children during the day while their parents are working, and to teach the children the basic skills they will need to learn in order to prosper in school. The people responsible for the program are specialized trained teachers who handle pre-kindergarten education from birth through kindergarten.

East Carolina University offers a Bachelor of Science in Birth through Kindergarten Teacher Education for individuals seeking an education and certification in the skills and knowledge necessary to educate young children to have the skills they need for kindergarten and elementary school, and to be leading members of their school. The program is offered both on-campus and online. The online program is designed to be flexible to the student’s schedule, allowing completion of classes for students who would otherwise be unable to attend the traditional class schedule. The online curriculum allows students to finish higher education to improve their career opportunities, while maintaining their work and personal schedules.

The program involves general education topics to make the student/teacher a better-rounded professional, with classes in topics such as Anthropology, Speech Communication, Public Speaking, College Algebra and many other classes that are required for general education credit. As part of the professional studies, the student will have classes in Early Experience in Birth through Kindergarten Education, Learning Environments and Teaching Methods in Early Childhood Education, Foundations of American Information, Foundations of School Learning, Motivation, and Assessment, Educational Psychology, and many other classes, including several internships which are required to help the student apply their education to developing the practical experience necessary to work with children.
