New technology has changed communication, creating new opportunities to create connection with audiences with the availability of new media. In addition to written communication of the internet, the few years have seen unprecedented growth in the ability for users to create video and interactive media for relatively free compared to a traditional media company, while simultaneously gaining access to a global audience and marketplace for their material. As part of the change, traditional communication, media, and journalism sources are adapting to fit the new normal for communications and media in the 21st century.
East Carolina University offers a Bachelor of Arts in Communication program to prepare students to work in public relations, communications and journalism in business, government, and community agencies. The program is based on traditional courses in mass communication along with courses reflecting the dynamic and technological communications changes occurring in media, communication, and journalism.
The program is available online and is designed to be flexible to the student’s schedule, allowing completion of classes for students who would otherwise be unable to attend the traditional class schedule. The online curriculum allows students to finish higher education to improve their career opportunities, while maintaining their work and personal schedules.
The program is based on a foundation curriculum of general education studies in order to make the student into a better-rounded inpidual and professional. The general education courses include speech communication, public speaking, and college algebra, principles of microeconomics, American history, college algebra, psychology, developmental psychology and literature. The professional communication studies program includes a curriculum in persuasion theories, small group communication, family communication, interpersonal communication theory, computer mediated communication, conflict and communication, public speaking, argumentation, media criticism, and many other classes to develop the professional communication skills of the student.

This is a bachelor completion program. A total of 126 semester credits are required, including transfer credits. Students must complete the first two years of college coursework prior to entrance into the program.
