Program Details

Delta State University offers an Online Graduate Educational Specialist degree in Elementary Education for students who want to teach in the Pre-Kindergarten to 6th grade or help children progress by providing effective instruction to students and leadership to other teachers. Students will study the skills needed to be an elementary educator as they prepare for the roles which they will be filling in their students’ lives. The program offers several specializations, including Educational Administration and Supervision, and School Counseling specializations.

The program consists of courses which enhance technique and training in the role of providing education to elementary-age children. Some of the classes students can expect to take include dynamic leadership for curriculum and assessment, instructional strategies in elementary education, leadership roles in elementary education, and effective instruction in elementary school.

Students completing the program will need to have demonstrated the necessary educational credentials and qualification for advanced responsibilities in the care and education of children. Those qualifications include using foundational knowledge to design or implement an integrated, comprehensive, and balanced curriculum, using appropriate and varied instructional approaches, use a wide range of texts from traditional print, digital, and online resources, understand various types of assessments and their purposes and strengths and employ them appropriately in the practice, to select, develop, administer, and interpret assessments, and to use assessment information to plan and evaluate instruction.

Students must have a grade point average of 3.25 on coursework completed for the master's degree and two years of school related work experience.
