Program Overview

Providing a strong foundation for professional development and leadership skills, the online-based Master of Arts in Coaching and Administration from Concordia University has grown from just 9 students enrolled to over 600 since 2005.  The staff at Concordia aim to provide practical and comprehensive educational instruction, focusing on leadership skills, and teaching and administrative capabilities. This faith-based university seeks to teach the importance of values and ethics in the athletics of a rapidly-changing future. The regionally accredited and nationally ranked MCAA program offers flexibility and support to its students, helping them to grow as professionals and enter or advance a career in the field of athletics.        
        
This Master’s degree requires 36 credit hours for completion, broken up into 20 credits of required courses, and 16 credits of electives. The required courses include instruction in coaching and leadership, sports ethics, legality in sports, research methods, and 8 credits over 2 classes in a culminating project. The culminating project is the building of a comprehensive professional portfolio, keeping, revising, and selecting from all work throughout the program. There is a wealth of options to choose from when selecting the remaining 4 elective courses. Students can focus on advanced theories and strategies for different sports, including golf, cross country, baseball, softball, and basketball, to name but a few. Courses are also offered in, but not limited to the subjects of facility planning, the psychology of coaching, sports medicine and performance, and athletic finance.
        
The academic year at Concordia is split into 5 terms: Spring I & II, Summer, and Fall I & II.  Students taking the maximum-offered 2 courses per semester and 3 in the summer term can potentially graduate in as little as 1 year. In order to apply for this MCAA program, prospective students must have a degree from an accredited college or university, and have maintained a 2.75 GPA. Students with a GPA below 2.75 are still encouraged to apply, but must write a letter petitioning the Admissions Committee, explaining their past grades and future goals in choosing Concordia.

    School Overview

    Lutheran Church settlers founded a higher learning institution based on Christian principles in order to educate prospective teachers by the mid-eighteenth century. In 1864, this teacher’s school relocated to Addison, Illinois, and this date marks the founding of Concordia University Chicago. Today, the private, 4-year Concordia University Chicago maintains ties to a larger network of Lutheran colleges, organized by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

    Students at Concordia University Chicago can complete undergraduate to doctorate degrees, in addition to certificate programs. CUC offers more than one hundred programs of study, focusing on fields in the arts and sciences, business, and education. Furthermore, working professionals and students requiring added flexibility can further their education through Concordia University Chicago’s online degree and distance education programs, housed in the College of Graduate and Innovative Programs. Students can enroll in the accelerated bachelor’s degree programs. These online programs engage students via asynchronous assignments and discussions, and students focus on one class at a time, per five-week sessions.
