Bachelor of Science in Fire Science

Program Details

Firefighters undergo extensive physical, educational and equipment training to prepare to save lives from fires. However, firefighters not only are responsible for training for the job, but for the situations they will encounter and the construction of buildings and materials they will encounter on the job. Most of the work done in connection with fires is preventative, which is why buildings are built to a certain code to prevent needless loss of life from smoke or fire if someone is in a building during an event. Buildings are designed for the purpose of being as flame resistant as possible and public buildings are required to have extensive fire safety equipment, including alarms, extinguishers, and water sprinklers. The work required to design and apply these systems is done by specialized engineers and contractors operating on a code to apply these systems correctly. Firefighters need to understand these systems to be proficient in their jobs.
