Clarks Summit University offers the Doctor of Philosophy program in advanced professional ministry for men in the ministry who want to develop the ability to engage in biblical and theological research and writing. The program is the highest level of educational achievement for scholars and as educators in missions, international academic leaders, and pastors who want to develop a strong teaching ministry. Students can study concentrations in the Old Testament, the New Testament, systematic theology, and Bible exposition.
The program consists of classroom courses which emphasize real-world education through examination of cases and education which will be applicable on the job. Those classes include seminar in Old Testament hermeneutics and exegetical method, seminar in New Testament hermeneutics and exegetical method, advanced Bible teaching and communication methods, old testament theology, advanced readings in the Hebrew Bible, biblical Aramaic, history and the ancient near east, studies in Deuteronomy, studies in biblical Hebrew poetry, and New Testament textual criticism.
Through completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the professionalism and skill necessary to earn the degree. The qualifications demonstrate that the student has been able to apply the principles they have learned in the program into their eventual development as a functional affective professional in their field. These qualifications include but are not limited to the ability to demonstrate the ability to use the biblical text in the original languages and to exegete it in a scholarly manner, to demonstrate the skills to engage competently in original research and writing that advance the understanding of the biblical text for the sake of academy, church, and society in order to enrich the spiritual life of others, and to develop a sense of and a commitment to the vocation of biblical scholarship in its dimensions of learning, research, and teaching.
