Students may complete courses at the flagship Clark State campus in Springfield, the Cincinnati location in Sharonville, and in Columbus at Columbus State Community College. This program aims to equip its students with the skills and knowledge needed to capture the audio of a live television program so that it is visually apparent as the caption rolls across the television screen. Professionals who perform this task may work in either the office of a captioning company or from a home based broadcast studio. An objective of this program is to be able to write in real time on a computerized “writer” that is attached to a laptop or other computer. Students are given the opportunity to practice accurate writing techniques from the beginning of this program.

The Judicial Reporting program and Broadcast Captioning concentration utilizes Realtime Coach (RTC), which is a realtime learning practice and testing web environment. This program requires its students to purchase a computerized writer, a laptop computer, and CaseCATalyst software. Students will have the opportunity to learn about CART, which is Communication Access Realtime Translation. An objective of this program is to help students learn how to write a realtime translation theory, and transcribe three five-minute, 180 word per minute literary takes with a 1.4 syllabic density at 96 percent accuracy. Students learn the basics of setting up and maintaining captioning equipment and are required to perform 40 verified hours of actual writing within a captioning environment. This program covers building and maintaining realtime dictionaries, the CART Provider’s Manual, and other related topics. This program requires students to complete 73 credit hours of courses in order to graduate with this degree.
