The Master of Science (M.S.) in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Concentration in Exceptional Student Education degree offered by Carlos Albizu University-Miami Campus is a program of study that is available to students in a completely online format. The aim of this program is to help students gain the skills and knowledge needed to become qualified and culturally competent educators who can respond to the language needs of individuals with little to no English proficiency. Students will be able to engage with faculty in learning activities. Topics cover include emerging technologies, sound pedagogy, practice, and research methods that are used in the field of TESOL.
An objective of this program is to train these students to understand and use language acquisition and education. Students should gain an understanding of cultural diversity and exceptional student behavior. Students should gain knowledge of special methodologies and interventions for the enhancement of the English language and learning based on the fundamental concepts of ESOL education. This program aims to prepare its students for career opportunities to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages in settings like public and private schools, colleges, government agencies, or other higher educational institutions.
This program requires students to take and complete 30 credit hours of courses in order to graduate with the Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages with a Concentration in Exceptional Student Education. The foundational courses that this program requires include: Advanced Theories and Practice of TESOL, Applying Curriculum and Materials Development TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Testing and Evaluation of ESOL, Foundations of TESOL Technology, Cross-Cultural Communication and Understandings, TESOL Research Project: Instruction, and Design, and Assessment. The Exceptional Student Education required courses include: Foundations of ESE Education, Learning Disabilities: Instructional Strategies, and Assmt and Remediation of Comm. Dis.

When Carlos Albizu University first opened in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1966, the school hoped to provide a graduate program in clinical psychology that met both the mental health and culturally sensitive needs of residents in Puerto Rico. In 1980, the University extended programs to a Miami, Florida campus, and by 2000, the University further dersified academic programs. Today, it is a private, not-for-profit university, and Carlos Albizu offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Carlos Albizu University awards doctorate, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees, along with certificate programs. Academic programs are held in a three-story building located in the center of historic San Juan. The 18-acre Miami Campus features academic facilities, a library and research resources, computer labs, in addition to student lounges and a cafeteria. Likewise, the Miami campus supports a multicultural and bilingual atmosphere.
