Capella University's online PhD in K-12 Studies program is designed to advance your knowledge to engage diverse learners in the education field. This program is part of Capella's Professional Education Unit, which has been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Coursework includes advanced research, educational philosophy, advanced learning theory, and K–12 history and politics. You can choose electives in such areas as adult learning, mathematics, science, educational leadership, virtual school instruction and assessment strategies. Throughout the program you will build a professional portfolio that will enable you to demonstrate your doctoral competencies to current and future employers.
Your PhD in K-12 Studies program includes 4 integrated components: online coursework, in-person experiences (called colloquia or residencies), comprehensive exams, and dissertation. Each facet of your education builds on the others to take you through your program and to your goal of a PhD.
With your PhD in K-12 Studies in Education from Capella, you'll utilize multiple instructional models, resources, management styles, and pedagogical strategies to meet the needs of and engage diverse learners as you synthesize and apply current research and theory on content, pedagogy, child development, and other education-related topics.
Common jobs with an online PhD in K-12 Studies in Education include K–12 teacher, school curriculum coach, educational consultant, full-time faculty, adjunct or part-time faculty, or K–12 alternative school teacher. Potential workplaces include: K–12 public or private school, state department of education agency, federal department of education agency, land-based or online college or university, or educational consulting firm.
This program requires three on-campus dissertation seminars.
For current K-12 professionals interested in extending their education with a graduate degree. Capella University education programs do not lead to initial teacher licensure.
Capella University’s Education Preparation Provider (EPP) unit is accredited based on the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards for a period of 8 years, from 10/22/2010 to 12/31/2018.
Capella University’s EPP is eligible for and will seek accreditation based on the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Standards during fall 2017/spring 2018. CAEP is the single specialized accreditor for educator preparation, and administers NCATE accreditation.
