Helping individuals overcome underlying issues that present as sexual dysfunction requires a discreet, caring professional. Capella’s Master’s in Sex Therapy specialization gives you the tools to provide compassionate assistance to individuals and couples experiencing sexual difficulties. Our curriculum builds on clinical counseling foundations, and expands training to include coursework in human sexuality and sex therapy. The Sex Therapy specialization includes coursework that is rooted in clinical psychology covering a wide range of issues for which individuals seek treatment. For graduates with prior counseling or therapy experience, this specialization provides the foundation for certification as a sex therapist as recommended by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, giving you a competitive advantage. The curriculum is designed to also prepare you for graduate work at the doctoral level.

Specialization topics include sexology; basic anatomy for mental health professionals; hormones; sexuality across the lifespan; gender; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender concerns; sexuality and culture; low sexual desire; sexual compulsivity; recovery from sexual abuse; treatment of sex offenders; and issues and trends in sexual health treatment.

With a Master's in Sex Therapy from Capella, you’ll gain knowledge of how the human brain works and the skills necessary to assist people with uncovering root causes for issues that affect sexual function.

    Requirements

    The completion of three 7-day in-person residencies are required.

    • Must have a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting agency or an internationally recognized institution
    • Minimum grade point average of 2.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale
