Masters in Community and School Health
Canisius College offers an online Master's in Community and School Health. The program is designed for nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, counselors, psychologists, and others with a bachelor’s degree and the appropriate science and health background. Graduates will be prepared to participate in the development of policy within the work place, as well as healthcare systems at the community, state or national level.
Individuals will take courses in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Program Planning in Healthcare, Research Methods in Allied Health, Healthcare Systems, Leadership Initiatives, State of the Nation’s Child, Health Impacts on Academic Success K-12, Healthcare and Public Policy, and a Master’s Project or Thesis. Students will be introduced to the historical development, structure, operation, and current and future directions of the major components of the American health care delivery system. Students will also take in depth looks into different organizational systems and structures, leadership styles, change theory, conflict and power, and coalition building. Depending on which electives students choose, they will be introduced to the issues effective different groups of people and ways to combat these problems. Students will also learn how to effectively research different areas of community and school health and submit a project proposal and thesis.
Goals of this program include having students demonstrate content knowledge, pedagogical, and professional knowledge necessary for successful performance in their field. Students will need to demonstrate necessary professional skills and dispositions. Graduates will be prepared to pursue employment as senior clinicians, nursing/healthcare administrators, clinical nurse educators, healthcare managers and leaders, or health policy application specialists.
