Program Overview

Camden County College offers a Certificate for Medical Coding for those who are interested in taking part in a certification program to learn to utilize medical coding systems and earn certification to advance their career. Students will develop their understanding of the practical utilization of medical coding technology as well as study medical coding. Through these tasks, participants will learn provide services through reading and reviewing medical documentation provided from healthcare providers. By doing so, students will perform the responsibilities of recording information related to the care of patients’ diseases, injuries, surgical operations and other medical procedures. Students will develop the ability to assign and sequence diagnostic and procedural codes using recognized coding systems for payment of health care claims, patient care records, and medical research.

Students will focus on practical studies through the curriculum that consists of 39 credit hours of courses that emphasize knowledge of billing and coding practices. Those classes include introduction to ambulatory coding, diagnostic and procedural coding, and medical terminology.

Individuals completing the certificate should have the capability to collect health data in accordance with accepted practices, apply coding and reimbursement systems, utilize electronic applications to support coding and data collection, and apply coding systems and guidelines, following ICD-9-CM and HCPCS coding to cases and records. Graduates should also know how to utilize coding software for assignments of data and collection of data, and display professional behavior and ethics.

    School Overview

    Located on the former Mother of the Savior Seminary, in Blackwood, New Jersey, Camden County College established a presence on this 320-acre tract in 1967 when it first enrolled local students. Since its founding, Camden County College has continued to grow, expanding programs and establishing additional campuses in Camden and Cherry Hill, in addition to satellite facilities in Lakeland, Sicklerville, and additional locations. Today, Camden County College supports more than 100 degree, certificate, and training programs.

    Camden County College offers students the opportunities to complete associate’s degrees, including degree-specific and transfer options, along with certificates and training programs. Career Programs allow students to target specific interests, and students earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree. For added flexibility, Camden County College supports distance learning. Online classes are delivered asynchronously and an online “Self Assessment” can help students determine online learning readiness. At times, students may be required to come to campus, or complete proctored exams at a local library or school, however many instructors simply have students complete exams online. Furthermore, hybrid courses allow students to participate in both online and face-to-face instruction. Distance learning students have access to online support services, including technical support.
