Spanish for Law Enforcement Certificate
California University of Pennsylvania offers a certificate in Spanish Law Enforcement that can be completed in two 16-week semesters. Four courses are taught within this period: Elementary Spanish I & II, Intermediate Spanish I, and Spanish for Law Enforcement. Elementary Spanish I & II are each taught in eight-week accelerated classes, making up one 16-week semester. Intermediate Spanish I and Spanish for Law Enforcement are taught the next semester, and are also each an eight-week accelerated class.
No matter what a student’s current level of Spanish, or whether they have taken previous courses at a different institution, a student must complete all four courses offered by this program in order to earn this certificate.
Students will learn simple words and phrases to assist them in the questioning process. These will be terms such as family names, colors, numbers, and conversation phrases. More advanced phrases include those you may use during an arrest, traffic stop, medical emergency, etc. Other language subjects will include commands, prison populations, border and immigration concerns, and interacting with suspects, victims, and witnesses.
This program curriculum is intended to meet the needs of correctional officers, law-enforcement officer, public and private personnel, and other related fields students may be interested in entering. Therefore, students will not only be learning the Spanish language, but will also be taught Hispanic culture and customs to better understand the community with which they will be working.
This is a completely online program, so students will obviously need access to a computer, internet, web browser, and software that allows streaming video and audio.
