Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion: Sport Psychology
One of California University of Pennsylvania’s tracks for the Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion is Sport Psychology. This track is designed for those in the health/fitness profession to improve their knowledge from a more psychological perspective.
This program will take 12 consecutive months and 30 credit hours to complete. The program is offered at two start times: January and July. Each start time is composed of two summer semesters as well as a fall and spring semester, just in different orders depending on start time.
Some of the courses students will enroll in are Essentials of Human Movement Science, Nutrition for Peak Performance, Special Topics in Sport Psychology, and Research in Sport Psychology. Students will have six classes (18 credit) in core classes, and four classes (12 credits) that are specialized for the Sport Psychology track.
This particular type of sports science draws knowledge from both kinesiology and psychology to study how psychological factors weigh in on sports performance. The information that students learn in these courses can be used to assist health care professionals to recognize signs, effects, and ways to rehabilitate injuries. The same methods can be applied to rehabilitation and performance enhancement.
There are a few areas of study within sports psychology. While this list does not encompass all the available topics, the major fields are covered. Personality, youth sport, coaching, team dynamics, and evolutionary perspectives can all be areas in the sports psychology field. Students will be decide what interests them the most and, by gaining more knowledge through classes, course work, and discussion, choose the sports psychology field that fits with their wants and needs.
