Master of Education in Early Childhood Education
California University of Pennsylvania offers a completely online program for current certified teachers seeking to earn a graduate degree in Early Childhood Education. The program can be completed in five semesters. Two courses will be taught each semester, including the summer semester. For those who already hold a master’s degree, an option is available to enroll in a 24-credit certification-only program.
During the courses, faculty will assign online activities such as small group projects, papers, exams, case studies, and discussion and debates. Students are expected to participate in all the aforementioned activities in order to earn credit hours. Both activities and courses will help students gain knowledge that can be applied to educational settings such as child care, Head Start, preschool programs, pre-K to grade 4 primary programs in public schools.
If students do not have any early childhood experience (teaching experience working with pre-K children), they are required to take an internship. This internship entails students to participate in an early childhood/preschool setting that is supervised by a sponsoring organization and university. Internships must be pre-approved a semester in advance, with the internship occurring in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th semester. Those teachers that are currently working should try to complete this internship during the summer semester.
Those with a large amount of prior experience may be required to log fewer hours than those with little to no experience. Those with no prior experience may need to be in the internship for up to 60 hours.
Some graduates of this program have gone on to be employed by organizations such as Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Kiddie College, and Upper St. Clair School District (all in PA).
