Graduate Certificate in Sports Counseling

California University of Pennsylvania offers a Graduate certificate in Sports Counseling that may be earned after students have completed an undergraduate degree. This program is open to practicing counselors, counselors in training who have taken at least 48 credit hours, educators, and other individuals who work with athletes. This certificate will not certify successful students as a Professional Counselors, although additional credits may be gained from some courses to further education and licensure.
To apply to this program, applicants will need to have 3 letters of recommendation, proof of at least an undergraduate degree and minimum of 3.0 GPA, and a possible interview via telephone or in-person. Also, interested individuals will need to type a 1000 word psychobiography. This serves the purpose of showing the writer’s psychosocial development, or the way their thoughts and behaviors react to different social factors. Cal U suggests applicants consider the answers to questions such as: How did I cope with problems and stress? What values were instilled, accepted, and rejected? What are my strengths and weaknesses?
Four courses will be taught in this program: Issues and Techniques in Counseling Athletes (CED 780), Sports Counseling Programming (CED 781), Advanced Issues and Techniques in Counseling Athletes (CED 782), and Contemporary Topics in Counselor Education (CED 788). CED 780 will be taught in a four-week session, then CED 781 &788 in a five-week session, and finally CED 782 in a five-week session to finish the program. CED 782 also includes field experience with a student’s chosen athlete population.
These courses will strengthen the foundations already instilled in students such as the ability to develop effective therapeutic relationships, teach life skills, and the knowledge, skills, and awareness necessary to excel in this profession.
