Certificate in Early Childhood Education
To enroll in California University of Pennsylvania’s Early Childhood Education program, interested individuals must be a certified teacher. This certification program offered by Cal U is designed for people who are interested in earning additional certification in early childhood education. Students may choose to earn either a master’s degree, which is 33 credits, or a certificate, which requires 24 credits.
By using knowledge about child development, families, and useful and proven teaching applications, students will evaluate school settings such as preschool programs, public schools pre-K to grade 4 primary programs, parenting programs, child care, family support programs, and Head Start.
This performance-based program relies on each individual’s prior knowledge and background to support the learning process. By using research-based practices, students will become prepared to work with children in pre-K to fourth grade.
Some essential courses students will take are Advanced Psychology of Learning, Evidence-Based Practices for Pre-K-8 Inclusion, and Development and Organization of School Curriculum. Other required courses are ones such as Science & Math, Advanced Childhood Development, etc. The last requirement is for students to choose ONE of the three: Thesis, Action Research, OR Teacher Education Internship. However, some students will not have a choice, and will be required to take the Teacher Education Internship. The online program coordinator will decide, during the admission process, which individuals need to complete the internship.
If students choose the Teacher Education Internship, they will be spending time in an education setting. A sponsoring organization and university will monitor the internships, which will be in an early childhood/preschool setting. If students have no prior experience, they may be required to spend up to 60 total hours in this setting. Internship placement will be based on any prior educational experience.
