The first graduation--in 1948--at California State University, Sacramento awarded a single degree. Since that date, more than 200,000 students have earned degrees at Sacramento State. Founded in 1947, the University first shared facilities with a junior college, then moved to its own campus in 1949, and finally relocated to a permanent home along the American River in 1959.
Today, the public, 4-year institution retains the official California State University, Sacramento title, but promotes the use of Sacramento State, or Sac State. Students at Sacramento State can pursue bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. To date, the University offers undergraduate majors and master’s programs, along with post-baccalaureate certificates and doctorate degrees. Non-traditional programs, including distance education degrees and coursework, at Sacramento State are housed in the College of Continuing Education. Students can participate in online, on-campus, evening/weekend, and hybrid learning environments.
