Program Overview

The California State University in Long Beach offers students the opportunity to earn a unique certificate through an innovative online learning format. The University has made available a certificate in Ghostwriting. A ghostwriter is an individual who writes books, articles, stories, reports or other pieces, and fully accredits another person. The work is done in a similar style, word usage and tone to match the credited writer.

The program is designed for writers seeking to advance their editorial skills in areas of freelance editors, journalists or entering into a new career of being an author. Students in the certificate program should learn the differences between ghostwriting and collaboration as well as the importance of working with Microsoft Word and the necessary methods for acquiring, maintain and changing clients.

Ghostwriting can be a new venture for seasoned writers, or earning the certificate may give new writers a sense of purpose and direction when accepting positions and writing for themselves or individuals. Many celebrities, executives, and political leaders often hire ghostwriters to draft and edit autobiographies, magazine articles or other written material before being published in mass media outlets. Ghostwriters are also used in music for the assistance in writing songs and lyrics and in movies or plays in the writing of scripts and screenplays.

The certificate is focused on three primary topics: An Introduction to Ghostwriting, Non-Fiction and The Industry. Each area of focus strives to develop student’s abilities in writing as well as enhance their understanding of the industry and other essentials. Ghostwriting essentials include concepts of: determining the market, assessing manuscripts, substantive/content editing, and other topics

Graduates may use the education to enter or excel in the competitive writing field. Some students may use the course to influence other writers in addition to increasing their own marketability in future literary ventures.
