Masters in Education in Talented and Gifted Education
The Masters in Education in Talented and Gifted Education degree offered by Buena Vista University is a program of study that is available to students in a completely online format. Buena Vista’s Master of Education program encourages students to choose one emphasis track. The Talented and Gifted Education track aims to equip its students with advanced skills and knowledge relating to educating talented and gifted children. By the end of the program, a student should be able to convey the knowledge base needed for serving learners who have been identified as talented and gifted effectively. Students enrolled in this program should have acquired the best practice models of teaching of talented and gifted children by the end of their course of study. An objective of this program is to supply the knowledge and skills needed to serve, administrate, and supervise a talented and gifted program.
This program requires its students to take and complete 30 credit hours of courses. This program is split up into core courses and track courses. The required courses that all Master of Education students at Buena Vista must complete include: Intro to Graduate Study and Research; Learning, Development, and Motivation; Social and Cultural Foundations; and Assessment and Evaluation of Classroom Learning. The Talented and Gifted Education required courses include: Psychology of the Gifted, Gifted Education Programming, Action Research and Practicum in Gifted Education, and Administration and Supervision for Gifted Learners. Students get to choose from the following: Contemporary Issues and Trends in Gifted Education, Creativity, and Thinking Skills for Gifted Learners.
This program culminates in a Capstone portfolio that is designed to convey a student’s synthesis of learning across the program. The portfolio requires students to assemble learning artifacts, which demonstrate the skills and knowledge they acquired during the course of the program. This program can be completed in as little as two years. Students can transfer no more than six semester hours of credit toward this Master’s degree program.
There are some admissions requirements for this program. A student must have a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution and they must have earned a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
