Program Overview

Bossier Parish Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice for students who are interested in careers in criminology, law enforcement, criminal justice, law, the courts, and the legal system. Students will learn about the processes involved in the investigation, arrest, and legal processes involved in trying suspects, as well as understanding the psychology and sociological factors that induce criminal behavior. This degree forms the basis for future growth and study in criminal justice by providing the foundation in studies such as communication, statistics, and other basic fields which will be used in advanced study.

The curriculum involves the study of social sciences and criminal studies in order to prepare the student for roles within the criminal justice system. Those classes include introduction to criminal justice, applied algebra for college students, college algebra, composition and rhetoric, evidence and procedure, criminal law, juvenile justice, public speaking, interpersonal communications, introduction to sociology, social problems, computer concepts, national government, and state and local government.

Upon completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the necessary educational qualifications for roles within the criminal justice system.  These qualifications include but are not limited to the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the causes of crime, criminal law, the role of police, and forensic science, to demonstrate understanding of specialized areas of criminal justice, such as terrorism, cybercrime, global security, and intelligence, to demonstrate understanding of emerging issues and of a focus in a specific area, such as policing or security, and to prepare with a general education curriculum for future studies in undergraduate or graduate education.

    BPCC is a public, two-year institution of higher education, located in Bossier City, Louisiana. The mission of BPCC is: “to promote attainment of educational goals within the community and strengthen the regional economy.” The college first opened in 1967, and today, is a member of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. Bossier Parish Community College is approved to award associate’s degrees, occupational certificates, and supports specialized career training programs. BPCC also offers training through technical programs, workforce development, community education, and non-credit courses; and the High School Early Start program allows current high school students opportunities to earn college credits prior to high school graduation. 

    Bossier Parish Community College offers associate's degrees and technical certificates that can be completed through one hundred percent Internet instruction, along with hybrid online programs that provide at least fifty percent of distance education coursework. The typical virtual classroom environment includes work often found in the traditional on-campus setting, in which students watch PowerPoint presentations and video lessons, engage in web-hosted learning activities, and interact with other students through discussion forums.
