Masters of Education in Reading (M.Ed)

Black Hills State University offers a Master’s of Education in Reading. This program emphasizes professional practice in the field of reading and addresses all International Reading Association standards for reading specialists and literacy coaches. A reading specialist collaboratively supports exemplary classroom teaching in literacy, assesses reading strengths and needs of students and communicates the information to fellow teachers, and serves as a resource to stakeholders. This program is offered entirely online and meets South Dakota's standards to prepare reading specialists.
This program focuses on comprehensive clinical components. These components encourage closer collaboration with partner school districts and facilitates additional application of student learning. As part of this program, students will be prepared to address the literacy needs of elementary, middle, and high school populations, as well as for leadership roles. Students are required to take 35 credit hours in order to complete this degree.

Black Hills State University is a four-year, public institution of higher education, located on a 123-acre campus in Spearfish, South Dakota. Founded in 1883 when South Dakota was still a territory, the university opened as Dakota Territorial Normal School. Graduate programs offer master’s and certificate options in fields, such as business administration, education, and leadership. Along with a wide range of individual online courses, Black Hills State University supports online master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, certificates and endorsements. Through BHSU Educational Outreach, students can access distance education resources and support.
