The Online Master of Science in Strategic Leadership at Black Hills University provides leadership training for individuals guiding organizations in today’s global economy. This innovative, interdisciplinary program incorporates leadership theories, concepts, methodologies, and mentorship skills that are essential to leading and transforming organizations. This program is offered entirely online.

The Master of Science in Strategic Leadership program is designed to prepare students for advanced leadership positions, and to foster career development in, a variety of organizations including government, non-profit, and the military. Students will complete core course work in areas such as visioning, motivation, creative problem solving, strategic thinking and decision making, innovation, leading organizational change, ethics, and effective communication.

The Master of Science in Strategic Leadership degree builds a strong foundation for students seeking leadership positions in the military, as well as a variety of other organizational contexts. Students will take 33 credit hours, 24 of which are core courses and 9 are elective courses. The degree has the potential to be completed in two years. The first semester will examine role models and apply theories to design a personal leadership development plan by taking courses in Leadership and innovation and Levels of Leadership. The second semester will promote the use of collaborative and ethical problem solving methods.  Students will take elective courses during the third and six semester. During the fourth semester students will use research methods and critical analysis skills for strategic planning. Lastly, the fifth semester will encourage professional growth in self and others.

    School Overview

    Black Hills State University is a four-year, public institution of higher education, located on a 123-acre campus in Spearfish, South Dakota. Founded in 1883 when South Dakota was still a territory, the university opened as Dakota Territorial Normal School. Through the twentieth century, the school continued to evolve and expand educational opportunities, and in the 1990s, officially became recognized as Black Hills State University. Graduate programs offer master’s and certificate options in fields, such as business administration, education, and leadership. Along with a wide range of individual online courses, Black Hills State University supports online master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, certificates and endorsements. Through BHSU Educational Outreach, students can access distance education resources and support.
